Cameroon Parliament Opens March 2026 Session Amid Procedural Adjustment at the National Assembly

The March 2026 Parliamentary Session of the Parliament of Cameroon officially opens today, Tuesday, 10 March 2026, in conformity with constitutional provisions governing the country’s legislative calendar.

As tradition dictates, the two chambers of Parliament will convene separately on the same day. The Cameroon National Assembly will hold its opening sitting at 11:00 a.m., while the Senate of Cameroon is expected to meet later in the afternoon.

At the National Assembly, today’s proceedings carry particular significance as Members of Parliament are expected to undertake the election and confirmation of the Bureau of the House, the governing structure responsible for steering the institution’s administrative and legislative activities.

However, this year’s opening is marked by a notable procedural challenge. Traditionally, the inaugural sitting of a new parliamentary session is presided over by the eldest Member of Parliament, who chairs the session and supervises the election of the Bureau before handing over to the duly elected Speaker. In this instance, the member who was recognised as the eldest parliamentarian is no longer alive, creating an unusual institutional circumstance for the chamber.

Consequently, the National Assembly is expected to identify and designate the next eldest members among the serving Members of Parliament to preside over the opening sitting and oversee the conduct of the Bureau elections.

The Bureau of the National Assembly is composed of the Speaker, the First Vice-Speaker, five Deputy Speakers, twelve Secretaries, and four Quaestors. The current Speaker, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, is expected to preside over subsequent proceedings once the Bureau is formally constituted.

Following the election of the Bureau, lawmakers will proceed with the formation of the Assembly’s nine specialised oversight committees. Each committee is made up of twenty Members of Parliament and is responsible for examining draft legislation, scrutinising government action, and providing sectoral oversight in key areas of national governance.

Meanwhile, the Upper House of Parliament, the Senate of Cameroon, will convene later in the afternoon to begin its own activities for the March session.

The opening of the parliamentary session thus sets the stage for an intense period of legislative work, institutional organisation, and oversight, as both chambers of the Parliament of Cameroon resume their constitutional mandate of representing the Cameroonian people and shaping the country’s legislative agenda.
