Hon. Banmi Calls for Concrete Reforms

During the opening of the March 2026 parliamentary session, Honourable Banmi Emmanuel, Member of Parliament for the Ngoketunjia South (Balikumbat) constituency, commended the Eldest Member of the National Assembly for her opening address, describing it as a timely and inspiring call to action for lawmakers.

The session, which officially marked the commencement of deliberations for the first ordinary session of the year, brought together Members of Parliament under the stewardship of the Eldest Member pending the election of the bureau of the Lower House.

Speaking shortly after the ceremony, Hon. Banmi Emmanuel noted that he listened to the address with keen interest, stating that the speech captured the expectations of many legislators as they prepare to tackle the pressing legislative priorities of the nation.

According to the Ngoketunjia South lawmaker, the message delivered by the Eldest Member sets the tone for a session that should be focused on concrete reforms and the translation of national policy orientations into actionable legislation.

Hon. Banmi further underscored the importance of aligning parliamentary work with the policy directives of the Head of State, recalling several key declarations made in recent months.

He pointed out that during the end-of-year address to the nation on December 31, 2025, and again during the Youth Day message on February 10, 2026, the President reiterated his commitment to modernising the management of the State and strengthening governance structures.

“We listened to the speech of the Eldest Member with keen interest. It reflects the expectations of honourable members at the start of this session,” Hon. Banmi Emmanuel stated.

The parliamentarian emphasised that these presidential commitments must now translate into tangible legislative initiatives, particularly through the tabling of bills that will reinforce institutional efficiency and modern governance.

He expressed optimism that the March session will witness the presentation and examination of key legislative proposals capable of shaping the future of the country while improving the functionality and visibility of State institutions.

For Hon. Banmi Emmanuel, the responsibility now lies with both the Government and Parliament to ensure that the vision outlined by the Head of State materialises through concrete actions.

“As Members of Parliament, we expect that what the Head of State declared during his end-of-year address and reiterated on February 10 will be reflected in the bills that will be brought before Parliament. These texts should help shape the future of our State and strengthen the way our institutions function,” he added.

The March parliamentary session is expected to focus on key legislative and policy matters, including governance reforms and measures aimed at consolidating national development priorities. Lawmakers from across the political spectrum are anticipated to contribute to debates that will define the legislative agenda in the months ahead.
