CAMEROON–SWITZERLAND COOPERATION - Speaker Datouo Visits Construction Site of New Swiss Embassy in Yaoundé

The Speaker of the National Assembly, the Right Honourable Théodore Datouo, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the construction site of the new Swiss Embassy in Bastos, Yaoundé, in a gesture underscoring the growing ties between the legislative institutions of Cameroon and Switzerland.

The Speaker was received by the Swiss Ambassador to Cameroon, Natalie Kohli, alongside the President of the Swiss National Council, Pierre-André Page, who is in Cameroon for the 51st Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF).

During the visit, officials of the company overseeing the project briefed the Speaker on the progress of works and the architectural vision of the future diplomatic complex. The new embassy will comprise a modern administrative building as well as an official residence for the Swiss Ambassador, designed to strengthen Switzerland’s diplomatic presence in Cameroon.

A distinctive feature of the project is the exclusive use of locally sourced Cameroonian construction materials. Swiss officials explained that this deliberate choice reflects Switzerland’s commitment to supporting the local economy, promoting Cameroonian expertise, and showcasing the country’s rich natural resources and technical know-how.

Accompanied on a guided tour of the site, the Right Honourable Théodore Datouo visited key sections of the future embassy, including the visa reception area, office spaces, and landscaped green areas that will form part of the diplomatic compound.

The visit highlighted the enduring friendship and cooperation between Cameroon and Switzerland, while reaffirming the shared commitment of both countries to sustainable development, stronger diplomatic engagement, and enhanced parliamentary cooperation. It also reflected the cordial relations that continue to deepen through sustained dialogue between the two legislatures on the margins of the APF meetings in Yaoundé.
