Week-long West Region visit ends with renewed dialogue, popular mobilisation and a warm farewell

The Speaker of the Cameroon National Assembly, Right Honourable Théodore Datouo, on Wednesday concluded a week-long homecoming tour of the West Region, bringing to a close a visit defined by sustained engagement with local communities, institutional dialogue and a large public gathering held in recognition of President Paul Biya’s support for his election as Speaker of the National Assembly on March 17, 2026.

The visit, which drew thousands of residents from across the region, combined political, institutional and community outreach. At its centre was a major popular rally that celebrated the enduring relationship between the West Region and the Head of State while reaffirming support for the country’s institutions.

Throughout the week, the Speaker maintained an intensive programme of consultations, receiving a broad spectrum of stakeholders in a series of audiences aimed at strengthening dialogue and fostering inclusive development.

Administrative authorities, religious leaders, traditional rulers, representatives of the Mbororo community, business leaders, women’s organisations, youth associations and Members of Parliament from the West Region all met with the Speaker to discuss the region’s priorities and aspirations.

The exchanges provided an opportunity to identify key development challenges while highlighting the importance of collaborative solutions capable of improving living standards and accelerating socio-economic progress across the region.

Observers described the homecoming as one of the Speaker’s most significant regional engagements since assuming office, underscoring his commitment to maintaining close contact with grassroots communities and ensuring that local concerns continue to inform parliamentary action.

The visit concluded in Tonga, at the boundary between the West and Centre regions, where the Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine, led a large gathering of residents in bidding the Speaker farewell. The ceremony was marked by an atmosphere of warmth and enthusiasm, reflecting what many participants described as a successful and impactful week of dialogue, unity and renewed confidence.

As his convoy departed the region, the farewell in Tonga symbolised the close of a homecoming that reinforced institutional cohesion, strengthened ties with local communities and reaffirmed the Speaker’s commitment to serving the aspirations of the people of the West Region and Cameroon as a whole.
