Boost Bafoussam Hemodialysis Center with 40 Million
Less than two weeks after making a public commitment before thousands gathered at a thanksgiving rally in Bafoussam in honor of President Paul Biya, the Speaker of the Cameroon National Assembly, Right Honourable Théodore Datouo, has translated words into action, announcing a 40 million CFA francs contribution to strengthen the Hemodialysis Center at the Bafoussam Regional Hospital.
The financial support, officially presented on Thursday, represents one of the first tangible outcomes of the commitments made during the July 25 rally and underscores a growing emphasis on pairing political engagement with concrete social investment.
The donation is expected to reinforce the operational capacity of one of western Cameroon’s most heavily burdened specialist healthcare facilities, where the demand for kidney dialysis services has expanded far beyond its original design.
Commissioned on April 10, 2023, the Hemodialysis Center was initially established to serve approximately 50 patients. Today, however, it provides regular treatment for about 178 chronic dialysis patients, while simultaneously responding to acute dialysis cases and emergency interventions. The dramatic increase in patient numbers reflects both the growing demand for specialized renal care and the confidence patients have placed in the institution’s medical services.
That success has also exposed significant structural pressures.
With only 15 dialysis machines, the center must cope with an increasingly heavy patient load. Medical personnel continue to contend with recurring electricity outages that threaten uninterrupted treatment, highlighting the urgent need for a reliable backup power system. The facility also faces shortages of essential medical equipment and an insufficient number of specialized healthcare professionals to meet rising demand.
Against this backdrop, the Speaker’s intervention is widely viewed as a strategic investment in strengthening access to life-saving healthcare services in the West Region.
The 40 million CFA francs contribution is expected to improve the center’s ability to deliver uninterrupted dialysis treatment, reinforce its technical capacity, and support efforts to address some of its most pressing operational challenges.
Beyond its financial significance, the initiative reflects a governance approach that seeks to connect public commitments with measurable action. During the July 25 thanksgiving rally celebrating President Paul Biya, Right Honourable Théodore Datouo pledged to ensure that the gathering would leave behind lasting benefits for local communities. Thursday’s donation signals the fulfillment of that promise.
For many families affected by chronic kidney disease, improved access to reliable dialysis services is not merely a matter of convenience but one of survival. By directing resources toward a healthcare institution facing sustained pressure, the National Assembly Speaker has placed public health at the center of his post-rally commitments.
The contribution also highlights the growing role of public institutions and political leadership in supporting healthcare infrastructure beyond traditional government budgetary allocations, particularly in areas where specialized medical services remain under significant strain.
As the Bafoussam Regional Hospital continues to accommodate a patient population more than three times its original dialysis capacity, the investment is expected to provide immediate operational relief while reinforcing broader efforts to improve specialized healthcare delivery in the West Region.
With the official presentation of the funds on August 6, Right Honourable Théodore Datouo has transformed a public promise into a concrete intervention one aimed not at political symbolism alone, but at improving the quality of care for hundreds of Cameroonians whose lives depend on sustained access to dialysis treatment.
