Hon. Adamu Edward Calls for Peace and Development Ahead of Elections

As the March 2026 parliamentary session opened in Yaoundé, Adamu Edward Lambe, Member of Parliament for the Donga-Mantung East (Nwa) constituency, used the occasion to commend the message of peace delivered by the eldest member during the opening ceremony, while also drawing attention to pressing development and security challenges affecting his constituency.

Speaking to the press shortly after the ceremony, the legislator lauded the tone set by Soppo Marlise Toute, who presided over the opening proceedings at the Cameroon National Assembly. According to him, the emphasis on peace and national cohesion was timely, especially as the country approaches another electoral cycle.

“The message of the eldest member was very important. She spoke about peace and unity at a time when we are entering an electoral period,” Hon. Lambe said. “This parliamentary session comes at a moment when elections may take place within the next five or six months, and it is therefore crucial that all political actors work to maintain stability.”

The parliamentarian noted that the proximity of upcoming elections could influence the pace of legislative reforms, suggesting that major institutional changes may not be prioritised in the months leading up to the polls. Nevertheless, he expressed hope that the government would continue to submit development-oriented projects for parliamentary consideration.

“We still expect to receive projects that will be beneficial to the state,” he stated. “As Members of Parliament, our responsibility is to carefully examine these initiatives and ensure that they are useful and beneficial to the population.”

Turning to the realities faced by communities in his constituency, Hon. Lambe highlighted the infrastructural challenges confronting residents of Donga-Mantung East, particularly in border areas neighbouring Nigeria. He decried the lack of basic amenities such as roads and electricity, calling on the relevant authorities to take urgent action.

“Our communities along the border continue to face serious challenges. Many areas still lack road access and electricity. I appeal to the competent authorities and decision-makers to ensure that these issues are addressed,” he urged.

The legislator also raised concerns over security incidents in the area, revealing that a village in his constituency had recently been destroyed by attackers believed to have crossed from a neighbouring country. According to him, the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities, who have promised to intervene.

“A village was completely burned down by individuals coming from across the border. We have reported the matter to the competent authorities, and we are hopeful that the state will take the necessary measures to protect our communities,” he explained.

As Cameroon moves closer to the anticipated electoral season, Hon. Lambe concluded with a message of unity to citizens across the country, stressing that the preservation of peace must remain paramount regardless of political outcomes.

“To all Cameroonians, the most important thing is peace,” he said. “As we approach elections in the coming months, whoever emerges victorious, let peace reign in our country.”

The March 2026 parliamentary session is expected to address key national issues while setting the stage for the country’s forthcoming electoral processes.
