Cameroon’s parliamentary community is in mourning following the death of Honourable Laurentine Koa Mfegue, spouse Mbede, Member of Parliament for the Mefou-et-Afamba Constituency, who passed away on 22 January 2026 in Yaoundé.

The information was confirmed by family sources.

Her absence during the recent ceremony for the presentation of New Year wishes to the President of the Republic at the Paul Biya Glass Palace had been observed, though no official concern had been raised at the time. According to persons close to the late Honourable Member, she remained in regular telephone communication until recent days.

Hon. Laurentine Koa Mfegue, spouse Mbede, last took part in parliamentary proceedings in December 2025, during plenary sittings held shortly after the official visit of women parliamentarians to the newly appointed first female Prosecutor General at the Supreme Court of Cameroon.

A longstanding militant of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM/RDPC), she began her political career within the Soa Municipal Council before being elected Mayor of the Soa Council in 2002. She entered the National Assembly during the Ninth Legislature in June 2012, where she served as an active member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs until 2024.

On 10 March 2020, during the opening of the statutory parliamentary session, she was conferred the honorary distinction of Dean by Age, in accordance with parliamentary tradition.

Beyond her legislative responsibilities, Honourable Koa Mfegue distinguished herself through sustained advocacy for the promotion of women in public life. Through the Democracy in the Feminine initiative, she encouraged greater female participation in governance and civic leadership nationwide.

In March 2024, her address at the opening of the first ordinary parliamentary session of the year drew significant attention, as she openly called on Members of Parliament to uphold discipline, accountability, and institutional commitment.

Renowned for her frank parliamentary language, moral authority, and loyalty to republican institutions, the late Honourable Member leaves behind the legacy of a devoted legislator whose service contributed meaningfully to Cameroon’s democratic life.

Tributes continue to emerge from political stakeholders, parliamentary colleagues, and constituents of Mefou-et-Afamba, as the nation reflects on the loss of a respected figure of legislative history.
